Over the course of my time in school I have discovered many different things about learning and more specifically about how I learn. I have learned that I am able to learn a new skill or retain information better by doing a task or through reading information about a topic. Discovering this has been important for me and has helped me through much of my high school career. This has enabled me to study better for tests, but has also helped me with activities such as quiz bowl and Boy Scouts.
When I was in middle school I tried experimenting with different study methods to help me in my science class. I tried flashcards a couple of times, and took notes in class, but these methods did not help me much. I found that I did better on tests and quizzes when I was able to read information from a textbook and go thorough each section this way.
I am partially a hands-on learner and and I usually have to perform a task in addition to reading about it in order to effectively learn it. In Boy scouts whenever I am being taught a new skill, I do not gain much knowledge when an instructor explains it to me verbally or if he or she demonstrates the skill. The most efficient way for me to learn it, is if I read about it and then perform it myself.
As a junior, I now know the most effective ways for me to learn information. While some like to have information told to them verbally and do not like reading information from a book, this, along with performing the task, is the best way for me to learn. Do you prefer reading information or having it told to you? Also, when did you discover what the best way for you to learn was?
